With his barrel chest, a deep and plummy voice honed as a stage actor, and a face like a granite boulder, he was an intimidating person and no one, it seemed, dared go near him. So he sat in a corner, by himself, nursing a scotch.

But Robert Ludlum, the author of The Bourne Identity, was very anxious to meet me. He had a rather cantankerous reputation. He didn’t like writers, and he particularly didn’t like other thriller writers, but our mutual agent, Henry Morrison, told me that he had read my novel The Ninja, and loved it.
